INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

 

1. WHAT DO I WEAR TO CLASS? Comfortable clothing appropriate for a workout is most important. Yoga attire, stretchy leggings or slacks is fine. You may choose to show your belly, but you do not have to. Be prepared to dance barefoot or with soft dance or ballet shoes. Dancing in socks is not recommended. Please also bring a simple hip scarf to tie around your waist- it does help you learn the movements. Veils and other props may also be used, but plenty of notification will be given before you are required to bring one to class.

 

2. IS CHILDCARE AVAILABLE? No classes at any location currently provide child care. For safety reasons, no observers are allowed at any location, either.

 

3. WHAT IF I MISS A CLASS? Make-up classes can be scheduled by request in both Gaithersburg and Rockville.

 

4. HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO ATTEND CLASSES? You must be 16 years of age to attend classes in Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Frederick. In Urbana, some classes allow members of at least 16 years to attend, but 18 years of age is preferred.

 

5. MAY I STILL TAKE CLASSES IF I AM NOT FEMALE? Men actually do perform Bellydance professionally all over the country and the world. Men are welcome at the Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Frederick locations, but are not allowed at the studio in Urbana due to the nature of the other courses offered.

 

6. WHAT STYLE OF BELLYDANCE DO YOU TEACH? My style reflects that of my teachers which is largely influenced by Egyptian, Greek, Persian, and Turkish forms. I consider myself to be an American Cabaret artist. I do not teach Tribal Style Bellydance, as I have no training in this form.

 

7. CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE IF I HAVE AN INJURY OR HEALTH CONDITION? I cannot replace your doctor when it comes to giving you medical advice. If you have any concerns, you should consult your doctor before undertaking any intensive aerobic or dance class. For the most part, Bellydance is a very safe form of physical art that is generally kind to the limbs and joints. Many dancers with physical limitations still enjoy participation.

 

8. WILL BELLYDANCE MAKE ME THIN (OR FAT)? I've recently had students ask me about a certain rumor that suggests Bellydancing actually makes your stomach stick out and become extended. This is absolutely false! Bellydance is a form of exercise that works to burn calories and tone muscles. That said, like any form of exercise results will only be seen with repeated effort and attention to a healthy diet. Bellydance can help you lose weight, but only when performed regularly and in addition to other forms of exercise and proper diet.
